Acne and Acne Scaring
Acne is caused by two main problems:
- Overactive oil glands, and
- Overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria
The solution, then, is:
- Target oil glands and reduce sebum production
- Kill bacteria
The following treatments are used to solve the underlying causes of acne:
- Blue light, or phototherapy, is genlte, painless, short sessions of light exposure which kills acne bacteria. It is completely non-toxic, and there is no downtime. Sessions are done weekly for 6-12 weeks, with maintenance sessions thereafter as needed.
- Photodynamic therapy is blue light plus Levulanic Acid. This topical solution is soaked up by acne bacteria and overactive oil glands. The blue light then alters the structure of the Levulanic Acid, destroying bacteria and reducing oil production. This procedure causes some temporary redness and peeling, but greatly enhances the effect of phototherapy alone.
- Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels can help to clear pores of oil and impurities, as well as having a regenerative effect on the skin.
ACNE SCARS can be softened using CO2 Fractional Laser, Microdermabrasion, and a newer technique called Carbossi Therapy, which breaks down scar tissue, and improves blood flow and oxygen levels in the skin, promoting healing.
