Kelowna's Dedicated Anti-Aging Facility
Expertise and Caring in Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Medicine.
For many people, getting ready in the morning requires some kind of hair removal: shaving legs or underarms, tweezing eyebrows, or perhaps even using a home waxing kit to remove hair on the upper lip or bikini area. Most of these methods are painful, messy, or both – and none of them are permanent. Hair grows back, and, if you’re shaving, it seems to grow back coarser. If you’ve been wondering if laser hair removal is a better alternative for you, here are some answers to some of the questions we have received about laser hair removal at our Kelowna clinic.
How does laser hair removal work?
At The De Pieri Clinic, we use the gold standard in hair removal; ultra-fast laser diode technology. Adjusting the treatment to your hair’s colour, density and coarseness, our technicians subject the hair follicles at the base of the hairs to the wavelength of the laser. The pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the light and the hair, including the follicle from which it grows, is destroyed. Over the next few days, the treated hair will simply fall out. Because the laser precisely targets only the hair, the skin surrounding the hair is generally not harmed by the light’s energy.
Can laser hair removal be done on all parts of the body?
We have safely performed hair removal on the face, arms, underarms, legs, back and bikini area. Dark-haired clients with fair skin are the easiest clients to treat, but we would love to see you for a free consultation to let you know if you are a good candidate.
How long does a session take?
With each pulse of the laser, we can treat many hairs within an area of 4 cm2 per second. Treatment of the entire upper lip can usually be completed within seconds. Treating arms or legs will take longer.
What does laser hair removal feel like?
The diolaze handpiece is designed to provide pre-, during and post-treatment cooling to the skin to provide a painless treatment.* In the rare event that a client is sensitive to the treatment, we do have a numbing cream that may be applied to the skin before treatment. This may be discussed during your consultation.
Before we begin treatment, we will cover your skin with a cooling gel which will help make the laser more effective and, for many patients, reduces discomfort during the procedure. During the actual treatment, you may feel a prickly sensation similar to a rubber band being snapped against your skin during each pulse. Any discomfort felt usually subsides very quickly.*
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on the colour, thickness and coarseness of the hair. Typically, for long-lasting effects, we recommend 5-10 treatment sessions every 4-8 weeks. As treatment proceeds, the intervals become longer. There are longer intervals for body hair (6-8 weeks_ than for facial hair (4-6 weeks) in the first 3 sessions. Lighter and deeper hairs, as well as hormonally-controlled areas, such as the chin, are more resistant and may require more treatment sessions. The majority of our clients reach about 85% hair reduction after 6-8 treatments, and some clients see results faster than that.* Of course, each patient’s experience may be a little different. After the desired results are achieved clients come in 1-2 times a year for touch-up treatments for sporadic new hair growth due to individual physiological processes.
Do I have to prepare for the treatment? Is there downtime after the treatment?
We will give you specific instructions before your treatment but usually you should shave a few days before your treatment and then avoid shaving thereafter. We will need to see a few millimeters of hair growth to target the follicles with the laser. Waxing and tweezing must be avoided for six weeks before treatment. Before and after the treatment, avoid tanning or being in the sun for prolonged periods for at least 3-4 weeks and use sunscreen while you’re outside. Any specific instructions are discussed during your consultation and at the end of each treatment session.
Are there risks to laser hair removal?
The technicians at The De Pieri Clinic are well trained, experienced and focused on your safety and comfort. As with all medical procedures, however, there are some possible side effects of laser hair removal such as swelling around the hair follicles, slight redness of skin, and temporary irritation. These side effects are all discussed at your consultation to ensure that you are completely comfortable and knowledgeable going forward with your treatment.
While individual results vary, laser hair removal can be a long-lasting alternative to other methods of hair removal such shaving and waving. It also largely eliminates problems such as ingrown hairs and the other inconveniences of shaving and waxing.* Please visit us at The De Pieri Clinic to learn more about laser hair removal in Kelowna.
